ACTIVITY 3.1. THE HATCHING PROCESS
SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
Q1. Why was the eggshell broken?
After 21 days, when the egg has fully matured, the chick uses its force to break the eggshell using his beak or egg tooth.
Q2. Where did the force come from?
A2. The force came from the chick itself.
Q3. In the life of the chick inside the eggshell, is there a right time for it to move and break-open the eggshell? When is this time?
A3. Yes. When the embryo is fully developed. Normally in the span of 21 days.
Q4. If somebody tries to break the eggshell from the outside, what is likely to happen to the underdeveloped chick inside?
A4. Quoting the word, “UNDERDEVELOPED,” it is mostly only good for sunny side-up or scrambled egg for someone’s breakfast. As it was not fully-developed internally, most likely it wouldn’t survive externally since the egg have not completely matured, it still doesn’t have much strength befitting its survival in his outside world.
Q5. What viewpoint(s) of development is (are) portrayed by this picture?
A.5. Development is comparable to the idea of the Egg’s hatching process.
It starts with a painstaking process of enhancing its abilities and strengths to survive in the outside world.
Q6. What can science do to the egg-hatching process?
A6. Egg Incubation is an amazing creation introduced by science in egg hatchery. According to science, climate in the incubator is much controlled to an ‘average’ to cope with the age of the different batches of embryos in the incubator. Incubators are designed to provide a consistent climate among all the eggs in each section of the incubator. Incubation follows a pattern of temperature to improve egg-hatchability and chick-quality.
ACTIVITY 3.2. THE MOTH AND DEVELOPMENT
SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
Q1. Was Pepito’s action of opening up the pupa case with a pair of scissors, good or bad for the moth? Explain.
A1. Nature has its way of its own like a larva that will emerge at the right moment from its pupa case. But human as we are, like Pepito, who was overwhelmed with his impatience and ignorance opened the pupa case forgetting Mang Tomas’ advice. Thus, caused the larva’s extinction.
If Pepito’s feat of impatience and ignorance lead to larva’s harm and loss, it simply justifies the end result of a single bad action.
Q2. Assuming that Pepito is the change agency and the moth trying to get out of the pupa case is a farm family, an individual, a community or even society in general, what application can you draw from this story of the moth?
A2. Like the adage saying, “Change should be for the good and not for the worst.” Basically, any individual and community with specific needs call for a more motivated and knowledgeable agency who could improve the society’s welfare. Any agency with impulsive attitude is a big interference to an individual’s development whose strength and capabilities have not been fully developed causing a hindrance or a failure to any actual encounter.
Q3. If a development worker tries to help the farmer, what is he in fact, doing to the farmer? Is this good or bad for the farmer in the long run? By doing the work for the farmer what is the development worker depriving the farmer of?
A3. Our ancestors used to say, “Give a man a fish and he will live for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he will live for the rest of his life.” Helping the farmer depends mainly how the development worker helps the farmer; if either way he’s giving him the fish or he’s teaching him how to fish figuratively speaking. If he was given the fish, he would likely survive for the rest of the day which deprives him of the knowledge that he can do much better to prevail all the way through. But if he was given adequate fishing education , the lesson he learned would likely benefit him and sustain him all his life.
Q4. When the insect was struggling to get out what purpose or function was this doing to itself? What is the importance of the process or struggle in the development of any system?
A4. Struggle is part of the insect’s development. When it struggles to get out, it simply means its strength is being tested. Struggle is relevant in the development of any system. This measures the strength and the resistance of the system to defy any barrier.
Q5. What principles in development can we draw from this?
A5. You cannot really say a system, an individual, or a society is fully-developed without being fully- tested. By then, the success and failure of an individual or system in the intrusion of brain twisting barriers will define his development.
Q6. Was Mang Tomas partly responsible for the tragedy? Explain. How could he have avoided the tragedy? What could he have told Pepito to prevent the thing from happening?
A6. Mang Tomas, on the other hand, should have provided complete information about the pupa case to prevent Pepito’s action from causing harm to the developing larva inside the pupa case.
Q7. With respect to question no, 5, what principle can you draw regarding the role of development worker as educator?
A7. Development worker should be concerned on the “improvement of the quality of life of an individual”. Hence, part of his work is to educate the masses the desirable life a society should live.
